Searching and Fields
In this database you may choose the Terms and Connectors search method or the Natural Language search method.

With a Terms and Connectors search, you enter a query, which consists of key terms from your issue and connectors specifying the relationship between those terms. With Natural Language, you can retrieve documents by simply describing your issue in plain English.

For more information on using one of these search methods, see online Help.

Tip: Use a date restriction in your query to retrieve documents the became effective, in-force, or were proclaimed on a specific date or during a specific range of dates, e.g., da(aft mm/dd/yyyy & bef mm/dd/yyyy).

Tip: Query Template

This database uses a custom query template in addition to Terms & Connectors and Natural Language searching. For Country Name, Title and Citation searching a default paragraph connector (/p) is entered when a space is left between terms. In order to search in the alternative, type the word OR between search terms. To use a different connector (for example /s or &) type the connector as usual.

Date and Additional Search Terms options in the template use standard Westlaw searching.

Tip: Special Country Name Equivalents

This database includes a special equivalency feature for selected country names. Type in the current name of a country, and retrieve treaties where the former name of the country is given, or vice versa. For example, if you enter Zanzibar as the Country Name, you will retrieve all the treaties where Zanzibar or Tanzania is the named party. This feature also supports alternative spellings for selected country names.

The abbreviations for the fields in this database are:
